Introduction

Selenoprotein W 1, also known as SEPW1 is a selenoprotein, which has aselenocysteine (Sec) residue at its active site. The selenocysteine is encodedthrough the UGA codon which normally signals translation termination. The 3'UTR of selenoprotein genes share a common stem-loop structure, the secinsertion sequence (SECIS), which is essential for the recognition of UGA as aSec codon instead of as a stop signal. SEPW1 shows highest expression inskeletal muscle and heart, and also involved in oxidation-reduction reactions.
