N-acetyl Taurine (NAcT) is an endogenous metabolite formed by the acetylation of taurine[1]. N-acetyl Taurine is a sulfonate that can serve as a carbon or nitrogen source for microbial growth[2]. N-acetyl Taurine can be used as a marker for alcohol in human blood, and increased levels of endogenous N-acetyl Taurine have been observed after alcohol consumption and prolonged physical activity (ketoacidosis)[3, 4]. N-acetyl Taurine was first described in 1990 as a compound in the sticky spiral droplets of orb-shaped spiders. Based on its high hygroscopicity, N-acetyl Taurine is an important component that ensures the flexibility of spider webs[5]. N-acetyl Taurine can be quantified by a combination of high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS)[6].
